Acetal, also known as Delrin® or POM, can be used for CNC machining. Acetal is known for its machinability and is used when stiffness and good dimensional stability are desired. When acetal is CNC machined, a computer directs the movements of the machinery to subtract raw material and form a part. Lathes, mills, routers and grinders can all be controlled using CNC technology. CNC technology can complete three-dimensional cutting tasks using a single set of prompts.
Acetal is used to produce many components that require high precision, including bearings, gears, bushings, televisions, electronics and more. The benefits of acetal include its excellent mechanical properties, dimensional stability, temperature resistance, impact resistance, toughness, low friction, moisture and fatigue resistance.
Both Acetal and Delrin® are thermoplastics used in CNC machining. Acetal is a non-amorphous semi-crystalline. Delrin® is a homopolymer. Acetal has a centerline porosity. Delrin includes PTFE fluorocarbon fibers which result in a raw material with the same properties as acetal but with the added characteristics of PTFE. PTFE is solid and slippery, eliminating the need for lubrication.
